Did you know?

Apple Ginza was Apple's first Apple Store outside the United States outside the United Kingdom - opened November 30, 2003, two years after Apple's first US Apple Store opened in McLean, Virginia. It was Apple's primary international retail experiment and the template Apple used for all subsequent Asian Apple Store designs.

The Apple Store Japan story

Apple Japan opened its first Apple Store at Ginza in November 2003 - the second Apple Store outside the United States (after the UK's Regent Street store) and the template for Apple's later Asian retail expansion. The Ginza store's flagship position remains: it's a multi-floor architectural statement on Tokyo's most expensive shopping street, with a curtain-wall facade, integrated Today at Apple sessions, and the largest Mac Pro / Pro Display XDR demonstration setup in Asia outside Hong Kong.

Apple Japan now operates 10 stores: Ginza, Marunouchi, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Omotesando in Tokyo; Nagoya Sakae; Fukuoka Tenjin; Kyoto Karasuma; Kawasaki Lazona Plaza; and the most recent addition. Plus apple.com/jp with same-day delivery in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya.

The major business decision affecting tourists: in June 2023, Apple Japan stopped offering tourist consumption-tax exemption (instant tax-free) at all of its Apple Stores. This was a significant policy shift - it pushed foreign tourist Apple buyers toward third-party retailers (Bic Camera, Yodobashi, Yamada Denki, Edion) which continue to offer the instant 10% tax-free counter. For tourists, Apple Japan is now the wrong destination unless you specifically need the premium retail experience or a custom Mac configuration that big-box retailers can't stock.

What Apple Store Japan is known for

Apple's premium retail experience in Japan with 10 architecturally distinctive stores, the deepest Mac Studio / Mac Pro / Pro Display XDR custom configuration availability in Asia outside Hong Kong, and (since June 2023) NO instant tourist tax-free - the deal-breaker for foreign visitors.

How Apple Store Japan prices

Apple Store Japan operates with firm sticker pricing. The displayed price is the price. Savings come from formal promotional windows such as festive sales, back-to-school, and Black Friday, not from store-level haggling. Their pricing is highly stable. Prices we observe at Apple Store Japan typically hold for weeks without movement, so there is little practical benefit to waiting for a surprise drop.

Tourist & foreign-buyer experience at Apple Store Japan

English support at Apple Store Japan is excellent. Full transactions including warranty registration, configuration consultation, and accessory bundling can be completed in English at flagship locations. Apple Store Japan does not issue tourist VAT refund documentation. Foreign visitors pay the full tax-inclusive sticker and cannot recover the tax at airport departure. International credit cards including Visa and Mastercard are accepted, which is useful for tourists without local banking. Same-day delivery to a local hotel address is available in major Japan cities, useful if you are staying centrally and prefer to skip the in-store visit.

Where Apple Store Japan sits vs Japan alternatives

In Japan's Apple retail market, Apple Store Japan's closest comparisons are Bic Camera (alternative channel, varies) and Yodobashi Camera (alternative channel, varies). Each of these competes on a different axis. Store count, retail format, pricing discipline, and geographic coverage all differ. The right alternative depends on whether you are optimizing for the lowest absolute price, in-person Apple-experience retail, or proximity.

What makes Apple Store Japan worth choosing

Apple Store Japan is best-known for Mac Studio, Mac Pro, and MacBook Pro. These are the categories where their pricing, inventory depth, and retail experience meaningfully differentiate from Japan's broader Apple retail. As Apple's own retail channel in Japan, Apple Store Japan sets the reference MSRP that authorized resellers calibrate against. The advantage is the full Apple retail experience: Genius Bar, Today at Apple sessions, custom Mac configuration, and direct Apple warranty intake. The trade-off is zero retail discounting.

In-store experience

Apple Ginza is the architectural flagship - multi-floor open glass facade on Tokyo's most expensive street, with full Today at Apple session schedule, Genius Bar, and the largest Pro Display XDR + Mac Studio + Mac Pro demonstration setup in Asia. Apple Marunouchi is the second Tokyo flagship, closer to Tokyo Station. Apple Shibuya is the most casual / consumer-focused location. All Japanese Apple Stores have universally excellent English-speaking staff.
