First Time Flying to Vietnam from India? Here's Your Complete Apple Shopping Playbook
A MacBook Air M4 costs ₹97,490 on Apple India. The same machine at ShopDunk in Ho Chi Minh City? Around 26,990,000₫ - which works out to roughly ₹88,500 after the VAT refund. That's almost ₹9,000 back in your pocket. And if you're picking up an iPhone too, the savings stack up fast.
But here's the thing - if you've never left India before, or this is your first trip to Vietnam, the logistics can feel overwhelming. Visa? Currency? How do you even get from the airport to a store without getting ripped off? I remember my first trip. I landed at Tan Son Nhat airport at 11 PM, had no local SIM, no cash, and my Grab app wasn't set up. Don't be me.
This is your first time flying Vietnam India apple shopping playbook - everything you need from the moment you book your ticket to the moment you land back home with a new MacBook in your bag.
Before You Leave India
Get Your Vietnam E-Visa (Do This First)
India passport holders need a visa. The good news: Vietnam's e-visa system is dead simple. Apply on the official government portal at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. It costs $25 (around ₹2,100), and processing takes about 3 working days.
You'll need:
- Passport with 6+ months validity
- A passport-sized photo (digital, white background)
- Your travel dates and entry point
Single entry is fine for a shopping trip. The visa is valid for 90 days, so you've got flexibility. Don't use random third-party visa sites - they charge ₹3,000-5,000 for the same thing the government site does for ₹2,100.
Pro tip: Apply at least 10 days before your flight. Processing is usually 3 days, but delays happen around Tet (Vietnamese New Year, usually late January/early February). Read our full guide on the Vietnam e-visa process for Indians for every detail.
Book Your Flight
Direct flights run from Delhi and Mumbai to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) and Hanoi (HAN). VietJet and IndiGo both operate these routes. Round-trip tickets typically cost ₹15,000-25,000 if you book 3-4 weeks ahead.
Ho Chi Minh City is better for Apple shopping - more stores, more competition, better prices. Hanoi works too, but the retailer density in HCMC is unmatched.
| Route | Airlines | Flight Time | Typical Cost (Round Trip) | |-------|----------|-------------|--------------------------| | Delhi → HCMC | VietJet, IndiGo | ~5.5 hours | ₹16,000-22,000 | | Mumbai → HCMC | VietJet, IndiGo | ~5 hours | ₹15,000-20,000 | | Delhi → Hanoi | VietJet, IndiGo | ~5 hours | ₹15,000-21,000 | | Bangalore → HCMC | VietJet (via Bangkok) | ~7 hours | ₹18,000-26,000 |
Get a Forex Card or Zero-Forex Credit Card
This is where a lot of first-time travelers lose money. If you're swiping your regular Indian credit card in Vietnam, you're paying 1.5-3.5% in forex markup on top of every purchase. On a ₹1,50,000 MacBook Pro, that's ₹2,250-5,250 wasted.
Better options:
- Niyo Global / Fi Money card - zero forex markup, loads INR, converts at live rates
- BookMyForex / Thomas Cook forex card - preload VND before you go
- HDFC Infinia / Amex Plat - low forex markup (1.5-2%), plus you earn reward points
I personally use the Niyo Global card for all international purchases. It's saved me more than any bargaining ever did.
Warning: Don't exchange cash at the airport money changers in India. Their rates are terrible. If you want cash VND, withdraw from a Vietnamese ATM using your Niyo card - the rates are significantly better.
Download These Apps Before Boarding
Your phone is your survival kit in Vietnam. Download these while you're still on Indian wifi:
- Grab - this is your Uber. Set it up with your Indian number before you leave. You'll need it for rides, food delivery, everything.
- Google Translate - download the Vietnamese language pack for offline use. The camera translate feature is a lifesaver for menus and signs.
- Google Maps - download the offline map for Ho Chi Minh City. Data can be spotty in some areas.
- Currency converter app - XE or Wise both work. You'll be converting VND to INR constantly.
Landing in Vietnam - Your First 2 Hours
At the Airport
Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City is chaotic but manageable. Here's exactly what happens when you land:
Immigration takes 15-45 minutes depending on your arrival time. Have your printed e-visa confirmation ready (or on your phone - both work, but print is safer). They'll stamp your passport. No questions asked. It's genuinely painless.
Get a SIM Card Immediately
The moment you exit into the arrivals hall, you'll see SIM card counters on your right. Viettel, Mobifone, and Vietnamobile all have stalls. A tourist SIM with 4G data costs 100,000-200,000₫ (₹350-700) for 15-30 days of data.
I recommend Viettel - best coverage across Vietnam. Get the tourist package with at least 3GB/day. That's more than enough for maps, Grab, and translating signs.
If your phone supports eSIM, you can also set one up before you leave India. Check our SIM card and eSIM guide for Vietnam for the full breakdown.
Currency - Don't Panic About the Zeros
Vietnamese Dong has a lot of zeros. 1 INR ≈ 290-310 VND (as of early 2026). So when you see a price of 26,990,000₫, don't have a heart attack - that's roughly ₹88,500.
Quick mental math trick: drop four zeros, then multiply by 3.3. So 27,000,000₫ → 2,700 × 3.3 ≈ ₹8,910... wait, that's the shortcut gone wrong. Let me give you the real one:
Divide by 300. That's it. 27,000,000 ÷ 300 = ₹90,000. Close enough for quick estimates.
You can pay by card at all major Apple retailers (ShopDunk, FPT Shop, CellphoneS, Mobile World). But keep some cash for food, transport, and small purchases. Withdraw from ATMs using your forex card - TP Bank and Techcombank ATMs have the lowest fees.
Pro tip: Vietnamese ATMs typically dispense 2,000,000-5,000,000₫ per withdrawal. That's only ₹6,600-16,500. You might need multiple withdrawals if you want a lot of cash.
Getting to Your Hotel
Do NOT take a random taxi from the airport. The airport taxi touts will overcharge you 3-5x. Instead:
- Grab - book a GrabCar from the app. HCMC airport to District 1 costs about 120,000-180,000₫ (₹400-600). Fixed price, no scams.
- Airport bus - Bus 109 goes to the city center for 20,000₫ (₹65). Cheap but slow and crowded.
- If you must take a taxi - only use Vinasun (white) or Mai Linh (green). They use meters. Everything else is a gamble.

Day 1: Apple Shopping Day
Where to Shop
Ho Chi Minh City has dozens of Apple authorized retailers. Here are the ones worth visiting:
| Store | Best Location | Why Go Here | |-------|--------------|-------------| | ShopDunk | 92 Nguyen Hue, D1 | Usually cheapest prices, good stock | | FPT Shop | 261 Khanh Hoi, D4 | Best customer service for tourists | | CellphoneS | 375 Hai Ba Trung, D3 | Competitive pricing, many locations | | Mobile World (TGDD) | Throughout HCMC | Huge chain, consistent pricing | | Apple Store (Online) | apple.com/vn | Official but no in-store pickup yet |
My recommendation for first-timers: start at ShopDunk on Nguyen Hue walking street in District 1. It's in the tourist area, the staff are used to international buyers, and prices are consistently the lowest. Use our live price comparison tool to check current prices before you go.
The Buying Process
Here's what actually happens when you walk in:
- Browse or tell them what you want. Point at the product or show them on your phone.
- Ask for the price. It's usually displayed, but ask anyway - sometimes there are promotions not listed.
- Ask for the VAT refund invoice. This is critical. Say "VAT refund" - they'll understand. Not every staff member offers it automatically.
- Pay by card. Visa and Mastercard accepted everywhere. Amex is hit-or-miss.
- Get your receipt, VAT invoice, and the sealed product.
- Do NOT open the product. You need it sealed for the VAT refund at the airport.
Warning: Your purchased goods must be UNOPENED when you show them at the customs counter for the VAT refund. I know it's tempting to unbox your new MacBook at the hotel. Resist. Unbox it on the plane home.
Language at the Store
You don't need to speak Vietnamese. At all. Most staff at major retailers in District 1 and tourist areas speak basic English - enough for a transaction. If you hit a language wall, Google Translate's camera feature works brilliantly for reading labels and prices.
For more detail on navigating the language barrier, check our post on whether you need to speak Vietnamese to buy Apple products.
What to Buy (and What to Skip)
Buy in Vietnam:
- MacBook Air / Pro - savings of ₹7,000-15,000 depending on config
- iPhone - savings of ₹5,000-10,000 on Pro models
- iPad Pro / Air - savings of ₹4,000-8,000
- AirPods Pro - smaller savings (₹1,000-2,000) but still cheaper
Skip in Vietnam:
- AppleCare - buy it from Apple India within 60 days of purchase instead. Indian AppleCare covers you at Indian service centers.
- Accessories like cases and cables - prices are similar to India, not worth the luggage space.
- Apple Watch - minimal price difference, not worth the hassle.
Day 2: VAT Refund & Departure
The VAT Refund Process
Vietnam's VAT is 10%. On a MacBook costing 26,990,000₫, the refund is up to 2,699,000₫ (roughly ₹8,800). The actual refund after processing fees is usually 8-8.5% - so around ₹7,500-8,000. Still significant.
Pro tip: Arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before your flight. The VAT counter can have a queue, and you need to do this BEFORE you check in (because they might want to see the physical products, which will be in your carry-on or checked bag). Full details in our Vietnam VAT refund guide.
Indian Customs on Return
India allows you to bring personal electronics worth up to ₹50,000 duty-free. Anything above that is technically subject to ~38.5% customs duty. However - and this is important - if you're carrying ONE laptop and ONE phone that look like personal devices (unboxed, set up, in use), customs officers at Indian airports rarely stop you.
Practical tips:
- Unbox and set up your MacBook on the flight home. Transfer your data, install your apps, put stickers on it. Make it look used.
- Same with the iPhone. Insert your Indian SIM, log into your Apple ID, download your apps.
- Keep receipts in your checked luggage, not in your wallet. If customs does random checks, having Vietnamese receipts on you is a red flag.
- If asked, declare honestly. The duty is 38.5% on the amount above ₹50,000, so on a ₹88,500 MacBook, worst case is 38.5% × ₹38,500 = ₹14,822. You'd still save money compared to buying in India. But in practice, this almost never happens for single personal devices.
Your 3-Day Mini Itinerary (Shopping-Focused)
Here's the itinerary I'd follow if I were doing this trip for the first time:
Day 0 (Arrival Night)
- Land at Tan Son Nhat airport
- Clear immigration, grab SIM card
- Take Grab to hotel in District 1 (stay near Nguyen Hue or Ben Thanh Market - central, walkable to stores)
- Withdraw cash from ATM
- Check live prices on our comparison tool to finalize which store to visit tomorrow
Day 1 (Shopping Day)
- Morning: Walk to ShopDunk on Nguyen Hue walking street. Buy your MacBook/iPhone.
- Ask for VAT refund invoice. Pay by card.
- Afternoon: Explore Ben Thanh Market, grab pho at a street stall (30,000-50,000₫ = ₹100-165). Visit the War Remnants Museum if you have time.
- Evening: Check Bui Vien walking street for the backpacker nightlife scene. Or just rest - you've spent enough money.
Day 2 (Buffer + Departure)
- Morning: If you need anything else (AirPods, a second device), hit FPT Shop or CellphoneS for price comparison.
- Afternoon: Head to airport 3 hours early. Do the VAT refund process at customs.
- On the flight: Unbox your products, set them up, make them look "personal."
- Land in India, walk through customs looking normal.
What If Something Goes Wrong?
"My card got declined at the store"
This happens. Indian banks sometimes block international transactions. Before you leave India, call your bank and enable international transactions. Also set a high per-transaction limit. Most MacBooks will trigger fraud alerts on Indian cards if you haven't informed your bank.
"The product I want is out of stock"
Check our price comparison tool - it shows stock status across multiple retailers. If ShopDunk doesn't have the 512GB MacBook Air in Midnight, FPT Shop or CellphoneS might. HCMC has dozens of stores.
"I got the wrong keyboard layout"
Vietnamese retailers sell products with the standard US/international keyboard layout. This is the same layout used worldwide (QWERTY, with all English characters). You won't get a Vietnamese-specific keyboard unless you specifically ask for one. So no worries here.
"The VAT refund counter was closed"
This is rare but possible during odd hours or holidays. If you can't get the refund, you've still saved money compared to Indian retail prices. The VAT refund is a bonus, not the entire savings.
"Customs in India caught me"
Stay calm. Declare the item, pay the 38.5% duty on the amount above ₹50,000. Even with the duty, your MacBook Air still cost less than in India (₹88,500 + ₹14,822 duty = ₹1,03,322 vs ₹97,490 in India... okay, that's close). The real savings are on Pro models and higher-spec machines where the price gap is bigger.
The Complete First Time Flying Vietnam India Apple Shopping Playbook - Cost Breakdown
Let's do the full math for a MacBook Air M4 (256GB) shopping trip:
| Expense | Cost (₹) | |---------|----------| | Round-trip flight (Delhi → HCMC) | ₹18,000 | | Vietnam e-visa | ₹2,100 | | Hotel (2 nights, budget) | ₹3,000 | | SIM card | ₹500 | | Food & transport (2 days) | ₹2,000 | | MacBook Air M4 (after VAT refund) | ₹88,500 | | Total trip cost | ₹1,14,100 | | MacBook Air M4 in India | ₹97,490 | | Net extra cost for Vietnam trip | ₹16,610 |
Wait - that means you're paying ₹16,610 MORE if you fly just for the MacBook? Yes. A trip just for one MacBook Air doesn't make financial sense. Here's when it does:
- You're buying multiple products - a MacBook + iPhone saves ₹14,000-20,000 combined. Now you're ahead.
- You're already going to Vietnam for work, vacation, or transit. Then the flight and hotel are sunk costs, and the Apple savings are pure profit.
- You're buying a high-spec MacBook Pro - the M4 Pro/Max models have ₹15,000-25,000 price gaps. One laptop pays for the trip.
That's the honest math. And it's why this playbook exists - so you maximize value when the trip makes sense, not when it doesn't.
