Mumbai to Vietnam Apple Shopping - Flight Options, Budget & Itinerary
Last November, I flew from Mumbai to Ho Chi Minh City, bought a MacBook Pro M4 and a pair of AirPods Pro 2, claimed my VAT refund, and flew home. Total time away: 60 hours. Total net savings after flights, hotel, food, and visa: ₹29,400. That's not a typo.
The Mumbai to Vietnam Apple shopping trip budget math works out surprisingly well - better than most Mumbaikars expect. And the flight connectivity has improved enough in 2025-2026 that the trip is genuinely practical as a long weekend getaway.
Here's the full breakdown: flights from Mumbai, what to budget, where to buy, and the day-by-day plan.
Flight Options from Mumbai to Ho Chi Minh City
Mumbai doesn't have as many direct routes to HCMC as Delhi does. But you've still got solid options.
VietJet Air (Best Value)
VietJet runs Mumbai (BOM) to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) flights, typically with a stop in Hanoi or Da Nang. They're a low-cost carrier - think IndiGo but Vietnamese.
- Route: BOM → HAN/DAD → SGN
- Duration: 8-11 hours total
- Price range: ₹10,000-16,000 one-way
- Departs from: Terminal 2, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport
VietJet fares fluctuate a lot. I've seen Mumbai-HCMC round-trips for as low as ₹16,000 during promotions. Sign up for their app notifications - they do flash sales every month.
IndiGo (Via Connecting City)
IndiGo doesn't currently fly Mumbai to HCMC direct. But you can connect via Delhi or Kolkata on their direct Vietnam routes. The total cost is usually ₹15,000-22,000 one-way, but you're dealing with a domestic + international connection.
Vietnam Airlines
Vietnam Airlines operates Mumbai to HCMC via Hanoi. It's the most comfortable option - proper meals, checked bags, and decent legroom. But you'll pay for it.
- Price range: ₹22,000-32,000 one-way
- Duration: 8-10 hours including Hanoi layover
- Best for: If you value comfort and have budget room
Singapore Airlines / Thai Airways (Via Hub)
Both offer Mumbai to HCMC routing through Singapore (SIN) or Bangkok (BKK). Sometimes these routes end up cheaper than direct options due to competition. Check Skyscanner - I've found SQ and TG fares from Mumbai under ₹14,000 one-way during sales.
Mumbai Flight Comparison
| Airline | Route | Duration | Price Range (One-way) | Baggage Included? | |---------|-------|----------|-----------------------|-------------------| | VietJet | BOM → HAN → SGN | 8-11h | ₹10,000-16,000 | Cabin bag only (7kg) | | Vietnam Airlines | BOM → HAN → SGN | 8-10h | ₹22,000-32,000 | Yes (23kg) | | Singapore Airlines | BOM → SIN → SGN | 10-13h | ₹14,000-24,000 | Yes (25kg) | | Thai Airways | BOM → BKK → SGN | 9-12h | ₹13,000-22,000 | Yes (20kg) | | IndiGo | BOM → DEL → SGN | 9-12h | ₹15,000-22,000 | Cabin bag only |
Pro tip: For a shopping trip where you're bringing back Apple products, the checked baggage situation matters. VietJet's 7kg cabin-only limit means you'll pay extra for checked bags. Factor that ₹2,000-3,000 into your comparison.
The Full Mumbai to Vietnam Apple Shopping Trip Budget
Let's get real about what this costs. I'll show budget and mid-range options because Mumbaikars tend to be practical about money.

3-Day Itinerary from Mumbai
Here's the itinerary I actually followed.
Day 1: Mumbai to HCMC
Most Mumbai-HCMC flights depart in the evening or late at night. This is actually convenient - you work a normal day, head to T2 at the airport, and land in HCMC by late night or early morning.
Airport tip for Mumbaikars: Take the Western Express Highway if you're coming from the western suburbs. The Andheri-Vile Parle stretch near T2 gets brutal after 5 PM. Give yourself 2 hours from Bandra, 2.5 from Lower Parel.
Check into your hotel and sleep. You've got a big day tomorrow.
Day 2: The Shopping Day
This is where the magic happens. Wake up early, have a Vietnamese coffee (cà phê sữa đá - iced coffee with condensed milk, and it'll change your life), and head to the stores.
Morning (9:30 AM - 12:30 PM): Price comparison run
Hit these stores in District 1:
- FPT Shop (56 Nguyen Hue, District 1) - reliable, English-friendly, good prices
- ShopDunk (73 Nguyen Trai, District 1) - Apple Authorized Reseller, check for bundle deals
- CellphoneS (112-114 Tran Quang Khai) - often cheapest sticker price
Take photos of price tags. Ask about promotions. Ask if they issue VAT refund invoices (hóa đơn VAT). Not every store does this automatically - you need to ask.
Afternoon (2:00 PM): Purchase
Go to whichever store had the best deal. The buying process:
- Confirm the price
- Request VAT refund invoice - show your passport
- Pay with your zero-forex card (Niyo, Fi, or HDFC Infinia)
- Get receipt + VAT invoice + sealed product
- DO NOT open the product yet
Warning: Pay in VND, not INR. If the card machine asks "Pay in your home currency?" always select NO. This is Dynamic Currency Conversion and it adds 3-5% to your cost. We've written about this trap: Dynamic Currency Conversion - The Hidden Fee Eating Your Savings.
Evening: You've got the products. Now go enjoy HCMC. The Bui Vien walking street is fun for food and drinks. Or take a Grab to District 2 for rooftop bars. The banh mi at Banh Mi Huynh Hoa (26 Le Thi Rieng) is legendary - the queue is long but worth it.
Day 3: VAT Refund + Fly Home
Arrive at Tan Son Nhat airport 3 hours before your flight. The VAT refund process:
- Go to the Customs/Tax Refund Inspection counter on the ground floor, BEFORE check-in
- Show: passport, sealed products, VAT invoice, purchase receipt
- Get the customs stamp on your VAT invoice
- Check in for your flight
- After security, find the VAT refund payout counter (near Gate 25)
- Collect your refund - about 8.5% of purchase price, in VND cash
On a MacBook Air M4 purchased for 27,490,000₫, your refund is roughly 2,337,000₫ (₹8,100). Nice chunk of money for 15 minutes of paperwork.
For the detailed process, check our Tan Son Nhat airport VAT refund guide.
Money Tips Specific to Mumbai Travelers
Best Forex Cards Available in Mumbai
If you're based in Mumbai, you've got easy access to:
- Niyo Global: Available through DCB Bank branches in Bandra, Andheri, Fort. Apply online and get the card in 5-7 days. Zero forex markup. This is my top recommendation.
- Fi Money: Digital-first, order from the app. Zero markup on international transactions. Good backup card.
- BookMyForex card: Order online, collect from their Andheri or Fort offices. Decent rates, 1.5% margin.
Load your card with the estimated product price + 10% buffer before you leave. Don't rely on loading more money while in Vietnam - network issues happen.
Cash Strategy
Carry ₹10,000-15,000 in Indian Rupees. Exchange at HCMC airport on arrival (rates are okay, not great) or at gold shops near Cho Lon in District 5 (better rates). You need cash for street food, small taxis, and emergencies.
Pro tip: If you have leftover VND at the airport before departure, spend it at the duty-free or airport convenience stores. Converting VND back to INR loses 5-8% in exchange rate spread.
Indian Customs at Mumbai Airport on Return
Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (Terminal 2) has customs on the arrivals level. Here's what to expect.
The duty-free allowance for returning Indian travelers is ₹50,000. A MacBook exceeds this, so technically you owe customs duty on the portion above ₹50,000.
Realistically: if you're carrying one MacBook and maybe some AirPods, and the MacBook is out of the box (use it at the hotel), most travelers walk through the green channel without being stopped. I'm not encouraging you to evade duty - I'm telling you what actually happens.
If you are stopped:
- Be polite, be honest
- Show your receipts
- Customs duty is 28.85% on the value exceeding ₹50,000
- On a MacBook Air bought for ₹86,800: duty would be on ₹36,800 = roughly ₹10,600
Even in this worst case, you're still saving ₹27,500 (₹38,100 savings - ₹10,600 duty). The Mumbai to Vietnam Apple shopping trip budget still works out comfortably positive.

When to Go: Best Time for the Mumbai to Vietnam Apple Shopping Trip
Best months: November to February
- Flights are reasonably priced (avoid Diwali week and Christmas week)
- HCMC weather is drier and slightly cooler (30°C vs 35°C in summer)
- Mumbai's own weather is perfect so you won't miss anything at home
- Vietnamese retailers sometimes run year-end promotions
Avoid: June-August (monsoon season in HCMC, flight prices spike for summer holidays), Tet/Vietnamese New Year (late January/early February - stores close for a week).
Is the Mumbai to Vietnam Apple Shopping Trip Worth It?
Here's my honest take. If you're buying just one MacBook Air, the net savings after a budget trip are around ₹8,000-10,000. That's meaningful, but it's not life-changing. It depends on whether the travel experience itself has value to you - and honestly, HCMC is an incredible city, so I'd say yes.
If you're buying a MacBook Pro, or any two products, the math becomes a no-brainer. ₹20,000-45,000 in net savings plus a trip to one of Southeast Asia's best cities? That's a weekend well spent.
And if you're buying for family - say a MacBook for yourself, an iPhone for your spouse, and AirPods for a sibling - you could be looking at ₹55,000-70,000 in net savings. At that point, the trip essentially pays for a future vacation too.
The Mumbai to Vietnam Apple shopping trip budget works. I've done it, I've done the math, and I'll probably do it again when the iPhone 17 drops.
