What counts toward your duty-free allowance?

  • Personal use items are generally allowed under the duty-free limit.
  • Laptops are typically exempt if you can prove it's for personal use and not for resale (one laptop per traveler).
  • Phones DO count toward your allowance - they're not auto-exempt.
  • Declaring honestly is always safer than trying to hide items.
  • Customs officers have discretion - even if your math says you're under the limit, you might be asked to pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I always have to pay duty on a MacBook bought abroad?

Not always. One laptop is generally considered personal use and may be allowed duty-free. Two or more laptops, or a laptop plus other expensive electronics, may exceed the duty-free allowance.

Can I hide electronics from customs?

Legally risky and not recommended. Indian customs uses X-ray and spot checks. Penalties for undeclared goods include the duty plus a fine of up to 5x the duty amount, plus possible legal action.

What if the item is opened/used?

Customs officers sometimes allow duty-free passage for clearly used personal items. Opening and setting up your MacBook before the flight can help demonstrate personal use, but it's not a guaranteed escape from duty.

Should I declare items even if I'm under the limit?

You can use the Green Channel if you're under the duty-free limit. If you're over, use the Red Channel and declare honestly.

Does Apple warranty still work if I owe duty?

Warranty is separate from customs. Apple's limited warranty may still be valid (confirm for your region), but if duty is owed, you have to pay it regardless.

What about GST on products bought in India?

Products bought in India already include 18% GST in the retail price. No additional customs duty applies to domestic purchases.
