When you're saving ₹25,000-35,000 on a MacBook by buying it in Vietnam, the natural next question is: should I buy AppleCare+ there too? Is AppleCare cheaper abroad? And if I buy it in Vietnam, will claims work smoothly when I'm back in India?
I bought AppleCare+ in Vietnam for my first MacBook purchase. For my second one, I bought it from Apple India after I got home. Both worked. But one was noticeably smoother than the other. The AppleCare+ Vietnam price is consistently 25-33% cheaper than India. On a MacBook Pro M4 Max, that's a ₹15,400 difference - real money. So buying AppleCare+ in Vietnam seems like a no-brainer, right?
Not so fast.
The Hidden Catch: AppleCare+ Region and Claims
Here's what the price comparison doesn't tell you. When you buy AppleCare+ in Vietnam, it's registered to the Vietnam region in Apple's system. For most products, this doesn't matter for basic warranty claims. But it can create friction in specific situations:
MacBooks - Vietnam AppleCare+ Works Fine in India
Because Mac warranty is internationally valid, AppleCare+ bought in Vietnam works at Apple Authorized Service Providers in India. I've used it. My MacBook Air had a trackpad issue, I took it to Aptronix Bangalore, and they processed the AppleCare+ claim without any fuss. The serial number showed AppleCare+ active, and that was enough.
But - and this is important - when I needed to make an accidental damage claim (I spilled chai on the keyboard, because of course I did), there was a slight complication. The service center initially said they needed to "verify with Apple Vietnam" for the accidental damage portion. It took an extra day of back-and-forth phone calls. Here's my honest take after having tried both:
For MacBooks: Buy in Vietnam if you want to save money. The ₹7,000-15,000 savings is significant, and warranty claims work in India. Yes, accidental damage claims might take an extra day. But that's a minor inconvenience for a 31% savings.
For iPhones: Buy from Apple India. Period. The iPhone warranty situation makes Vietnam AppleCare+ a bad deal regardless of the price difference. You can buy AppleCare+ from Apple India within 60 days of purchase by calling 1800-107-4949 or through the Apple Support app on the iPhone itself.
For iPads: WiFi model - buy in Vietnam. Cellular model - buy from Apple India. Same logic as iPhones for the cellular restriction.
Pro tip: If you buy a MacBook in Vietnam and skip AppleCare+ at the store, you still have 60 days to buy it. Set a reminder on your phone for day 50. When you get home, you can buy AppleCare+ from Apple India's website or by calling Apple Support. You get the India-region registration with no ambiguity on claims - at the India price, of course.
How to Buy AppleCare+ from Apple India for a Vietnam-Purchased Product
This is the part most people don't know about. Yes, you can absolutely buy AppleCare+ from Apple India for a product purchased in Vietnam. Here's how:
- Within 60 days of purchase, open the Apple Support app on your iPhone or go to Apple's website
- Enter the serial number of your Vietnam-bought product
- Apple's system will check if the device is eligible (it needs to pass a remote diagnostic)
- Pay the Indian AppleCare+ price
- Done - your AppleCare+ is now registered to Apple India
The remote diagnostic is the only potential hiccup. Apple needs to verify the device has no pre-existing damage. For a MacBook, this means running Apple Diagnostics (hold D while booting). For an iPhone, the Apple Support app handles it automatically.
Warning: Don't wait until day 59 to do this. If the diagnostic reveals any issue, you won't have time to get it fixed and re-run the diagnostic before the 60-day window closes.
Is AppleCare+ Worth It At All? The Math
Before we debate Vietnam vs India pricing, let's address the bigger question: should you buy AppleCare+ at all?
