How we check Apple availability

We ask each retailer's own systems what they have, at the finest resolution that retailer will answer at, and we record the answer together with that resolution and the time. This page is generated from the same data the stock pages read, so it cannot describe a process we are not actually running.

Identity: the part number, never the name

Apple gives every configuration a regional part number, like MG6J4HN/A. Retailers state it, so matching a listing to a product is a lookup, not a guess. A listing whose part number we cannot resolve is quarantined and never rendered: we would rather show nothing than show a 256GB price under a 512GB heading. Part numbers a retailer states that we do not yet know are verified against Apple's own permalink and added to the catalogue, which is how the catalogue grows.

Resolution: what "in stock" is actually about

Retailers answer at very different resolutions, and the difference matters more than the answer. Every figure on the site is labelled with the one it came from.

City-wide

The retailer answered but gave no usable status. Not the same as out of stock, and never shown as one.

We also record how each status was arrived at: "reported" means the retailer stated this status; "derived" means derived from the retailer's own availability fields; "inferred" means inferred from how the retailer's page behaved.

What we never do

• Infer out of stock from silence. If a check fails, we record a failure, not a zero. A missing answer shows as "not checked", which is its own state.
• Blend resolutions. A province-wide answer and a shopfront answer are never averaged into one availability figure.
• Rescue a price we do not trust. A price that fails validation is quarantined, and the page says there is no reliable price rather than showing the next-worst number.
• Imply we are the retailer. We are an independent aggregator, not Apple and not any shop listed. We cannot hold, reserve or sell stock.

Counted from the pipeline's own output. "Stores answering" is how many named shops actually returned a per-store answer, out of the shops we know that chain has.
