Should I Buy AppleCare in Vietnam or Add It Later in India?

Buy AppleCare in Vietnam at purchase or wait and add it in India within 60 days? Price comparison, pros, cons, and my recommendation.

Should I Buy AppleCare in Vietnam or Add It Later in India?

You're at CellphoneS in Ho Chi Minh City. You've just picked out your MacBook Air M4. The sales rep asks if you want to add AppleCare+. It costs 4,590,000₫ - about ₹15,850. Back in India, the same AppleCare+ would cost ₹22,900. That's a ₹7,050 difference. Obvious choice, right? Buy it in Vietnam?

Not so fast. Whether you should buy AppleCare in Vietnam or add it later in India depends on more than just the sticker price. I've done it both ways - bought AppleCare in Vietnam on my first trip and added it from India on my second. And honestly, the India route was smoother for me despite costing more. Here's why the decision isn't as clear-cut as the price difference suggests.

AppleCare+ Prices: Vietnam vs India (March 2026)

Let's start with the numbers so you know exactly what we're comparing.

MacBook AppleCare+ Prices

| Product | Vietnam (VND) | Vietnam (INR) | India (INR) | Vietnam Saves | |---------|-------------|-------------|-------------|--------------| | MacBook Air M4 13" | 4,590,000₫ | ~₹15,850 | ₹22,900 | ₹7,050 (31%) | | MacBook Air M4 15" | 4,590,000₫ | ~₹15,850 | ₹22,900 | ₹7,050 (31%) | | MacBook Pro M4 14" | 6,990,000₫ | ~₹24,100 | ₹34,900 | ₹10,800 (31%) | | MacBook Pro M4 Pro 14" | 6,990,000₫ | ~₹24,100 | ₹34,900 | ₹10,800 (31%) |

iPhone AppleCare+ Prices

| Product | Vietnam (VND) | Vietnam (INR) | India (INR) | Vietnam Saves | |---------|-------------|-------------|-------------|--------------| | iPhone 16 / 16 Plus | 3,990,000₫ | ~₹13,770 | ₹15,900 | ₹2,130 (13%) | | iPhone 16 Pro | 4,590,000₫ | ~₹15,850 | ₹23,900 | ₹8,050 (34%) | | iPhone 16 Pro Max | 4,590,000₫ | ~₹15,850 | ₹23,900 | ₹8,050 (34%) |

The savings are real - 31% on MacBook AppleCare and up to 34% on iPhone Pro AppleCare. For a MacBook Pro, that's nearly ₹11,000 saved. For an iPhone Pro Max, it's over ₹8,000. These are meaningful amounts.

So why wouldn't you just buy it in Vietnam? Several reasons.

The Case for Buying AppleCare in Vietnam

1. It's Genuinely Cheaper

The 31-34% savings are hard to ignore. On a MacBook Pro, ₹10,800 saved on AppleCare is enough to buy AirPods 4 in Vietnam. The price advantage is the single strongest argument for buying AppleCare in Vietnam.

2. You Handle Everything in One Trip

Buy the device, add AppleCare, claim the VAT refund on both. Done. You don't need to remember to do anything when you get home. There's a certain peace of mind in having everything wrapped up before you leave Vietnam.

3. The 60-Day Window Isn't a Concern

If you buy in Vietnam at the time of purchase, you don't need to worry about the 60-day deadline to add AppleCare later. One less thing to track.

The Case for Waiting and Adding AppleCare in India

1. You Increase Your Customs Exposure

This is the big one. If you buy AppleCare in Vietnam along with your MacBook, the AppleCare cost gets added to your total purchase value for customs purposes. That MacBook Air M4 at ₹71,200 plus AppleCare at ₹15,850 is now ₹87,050 at the customs counter instead of ₹71,200.

On the ₹50,000 duty-free allowance, that means an additional ₹15,850 of taxable value - which at 38.5% duty is an extra ₹6,102 in potential customs duty. That nearly wipes out the ₹7,050 you saved on AppleCare pricing.

2. AppleCare Bought in India Registers Under Apple India

When you buy AppleCare+ through Apple India (via the Apple Support app or Apple.com/in), your protection plan is registered in Apple's India system. This means:

  • Service requests go through Apple India directly
  • Genius Bar appointments at Apple India stores work seamlessly
  • Any claims are processed in INR
  • No confusion about which region your coverage is under

When you buy AppleCare in Vietnam, the plan is technically registered under Apple Vietnam. It still works globally - Apple honors AppleCare worldwide - but I've heard of cases where service reps needed to look up the plan manually because it wasn't showing in the India system automatically.

3. You Have 60 Days to Decide

Apple gives you 60 calendar days from the date of purchase to add AppleCare+. That's a generous window. You can fly home, use your device for a few weeks, and then decide if you want AppleCare.

Maybe you realize you don't actually need it - you've always been careful with your devices and never claimed warranty before. Maybe your credit card already offers extended warranty coverage. Having 60 days to think about it is valuable.

4. The Process Is Dead Simple from India

Adding AppleCare from India takes about 5 minutes:

  1. Open the Apple Support app on your iPhone
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID
  3. Select your device (it shows up automatically)
  4. Choose AppleCare+
  5. Pay with an Indian credit card

That's it. No visiting a store. No phone call needed (though you can call Apple India if you prefer). It works on devices purchased anywhere in the world, including Vietnam.

Pro tip: The Apple Support app sometimes shows AppleCare+ options faster than the website. If apple.com/in isn't showing AppleCare for your Vietnam-purchased device, try the app instead. It usually picks up new devices within 24-48 hours of first activation.

The Decision Framework

My Recommendation: When to Buy Where

After doing it both ways, here's what I tell people:

Buy AppleCare in Vietnam if:

  • You're buying only ONE device (lower customs exposure)
  • The device is a MacBook Pro (₹10,800 savings is significant)
  • You're confident about handling customs - you don't care about the added value
  • You want everything done in one go and don't trust yourself to remember the 60-day deadline

Buy AppleCare in India if:

  • You're buying MULTIPLE devices in Vietnam (every rupee of customs value matters)
  • You want AppleCare registered under Apple India's system
  • You're not 100% sure you want AppleCare (use the 60 days to decide)
  • The device is a base iPhone 16 where the savings are only ₹2,130 - not worth the added customs exposure

My honest take: For most Indian travelers buying Apple products in Vietnam, I recommend buying AppleCare in India after you get home. The savings from buying it in Vietnam (₹7,000-₹11,000) are partially offset by increased customs exposure, and the convenience of having AppleCare registered in India's system is worth a lot over 2-3 years of coverage. The one exception: if you're buying a single MacBook Pro and nothing else, grab AppleCare in Vietnam. The ₹10,800 savings is too good, and your customs exposure on one device is manageable.

How to Add AppleCare in India After Buying in Vietnam

If you decide to wait, here's the step-by-step process. I covered this in detail in my full guide to adding AppleCare in India within 60 days, but here's the quick version:

  1. Day 1-3 after returning: Set up your device with your Apple ID. Make sure it appears in your Apple ID device list (Settings → [Your Name] → scroll down).

  2. Within 60 days of purchase date: Open Apple Support app → Select your device → "Check AppleCare+ eligibility" → Purchase.

  3. Apple may run a remote diagnostic on your device before allowing the purchase. This takes about 2 minutes. It checks that the device is functioning properly - not that it was bought in a specific country.

  4. Pay with any Indian credit card. AppleCare+ India pricing applies.

  5. You'll get a confirmation email from Apple India. Save this - it's your proof of coverage.

The whole thing takes 5-10 minutes. Set a calendar reminder for 50 days after your purchase date so you don't miss the window.

Warning: The 60-day window is firm. Day 61 and Apple's system won't let you add AppleCare+ anymore. I've seen people miss this deadline because they thought it was "about two months" - it's exactly 60 calendar days from the receipt date. Mark your calendar.

AppleCare Pricing on the VAT Refund

One more thing to consider: if you buy AppleCare in Vietnam at the store, it's included in your total purchase for the VAT refund. That 8.5% refund applies to the AppleCare amount too.

So your ₹15,850 AppleCare (4,590,000₫) gets a VAT refund of roughly ₹1,350. That brings the effective Vietnam AppleCare cost down to about ₹14,500, saving you ₹8,400 compared to India's ₹22,900.

But - and this is the key trade-off - that ₹15,850 also gets added to your customs-dutiable value when entering India. The math gets circular. The more you think about it, the more the "just buy it in India" approach wins on simplicity, even if it doesn't win on pure price.

The Bottom Line

Buying AppleCare in Vietnam saves you money. Buying it in India saves you headaches. For a single high-value device like a MacBook Pro, the Vietnam savings are significant enough to justify. For everything else - especially if you're already carrying multiple Apple products - buy AppleCare in India after you're home.

Either way, don't skip AppleCare entirely. A MacBook screen replacement costs ₹35,000-₹50,000 without it. AppleCare+ pays for itself the first time you need it. The only question is where you buy it - and now you know the trade-offs.
