Should I Buy iPhone in Vietnam or Wait for Amazon Sale in India?

The Amazon Great Indian Festival is the one time each year when iPhone prices in India actually feel reasonable. Last October, the iPhone 16 Pro Max dropped from ₹1,44,900 to an effective price of around ₹1,26,900 with SBI card offers. If you were patient enough to wait, that's a ₹18,000 discount. Solid.

But here's the thing - that same iPhone 16 Pro Max costs about ₹94,400 at Di Dong Viet in Ho Chi Minh City after the VAT refund. That's ₹32,500 less than Amazon's best festival price. Not ₹32,500 less than MRP - ₹32,500 less than the sale price.

So should you buy an iPhone in Vietnam or wait for the Amazon sale in India? I've done both. Bought an iPhone during the Amazon Great Indian Festival one year, picked one up in Vietnam the next. The Vietnam purchase saved me serious money, but the Amazon route was more convenient. Here's the honest comparison.

Amazon Great Indian Festival iPhone Prices - What You Actually Pay

Let's kill one myth first. The "sale prices" you see plastered across Amazon's homepage aren't what you actually pay. The real effective price depends on which bank card you have, whether you're exchanging an old phone, and whether you catch a coupon.

Here's the breakdown for the 2025 Amazon Great Indian Festival (the most recent one), and what we can reasonably expect for October 2026:

iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB - Amazon Sale Pricing

| Component | Amount | |-----------|--------| | Listed sale price | ₹1,34,900 | | SBI/HDFC card instant discount (10%) | -₹5,000 (capped) | | Exchange bonus (iPhone 14 Pro Max, good condition) | -₹3,000 to -₹8,000 | | Amazon Pay cashback | -₹500 to -₹1,000 | | Best effective price | ~₹1,21,400 to ₹1,26,900 |

That ₹1,21,400 number requires you to have the right bank card AND trade in a relatively recent iPhone in good condition. If you don't have either, your effective price is closer to ₹1,29,900-₹1,34,900.

Pro tip: Amazon's bank card discounts are capped - usually at ₹5,000 for iPhones. So the "10% off with SBI" isn't actually 10% on a ₹1,34,900 purchase. It caps out at ₹5,000. Always read the terms and conditions on the deal page.

Vietnam iPhone Prices - What You Actually Pay

Vietnam pricing is simpler. Walk into a store, see a price, negotiate a bit, and that's what you pay. Then claim the VAT refund at the airport.

iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB - Vietnam Store Prices (March 2026)

| Store | Listed Price (VND) | After VAT Refund | INR Equivalent | |-------|-------------------|-------------------|----------------| | Di Dong Viet | 32,490,000₫ | 30,275,000₫ | ₹94,400 | | CellphoneS | 32,990,000₫ | 30,745,000₫ | ₹95,800 | | ShopDunk | 33,490,000₫ | 31,210,000₫ | ₹97,300 | | FPT Shop | 33,990,000₫ | 31,680,000₫ | ₹98,700 |

No bank card games. No exchange requirements. No waiting for October. These prices are available any day of the week.

The Real Comparison: Vietnam vs Amazon Great Indian Festival

Let me put the numbers side by side for every current iPhone model. Vietnam prices are from CellphoneS (mid-range among retailers). Amazon prices are the best effective prices from the most recent Great Indian Festival.

iPhone Vietnam vs Amazon India Price Comparison

| Model | Amazon Best (with all offers) | Vietnam After VAT Refund | Vietnam Wins By | |-------|------------------------------|-------------------------|----------------| | iPhone 16 128GB | ~₹69,900 | ₹62,400 | ₹7,500 | | iPhone 16 256GB | ~₹79,900 | ₹71,800 | ₹8,100 | | iPhone 16 Plus 128GB | ~₹79,900 | ₹70,500 | ₹9,400 | | iPhone 16 Plus 256GB | ~₹89,900 | ₹80,200 | ₹9,700 | | iPhone 16 Pro 128GB | ~₹1,09,900 | ₹84,600 | ₹25,300 | | iPhone 16 Pro 256GB | ~₹1,19,900 | ₹93,200 | ₹26,700 | | iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB | ~₹1,26,900 | ₹95,800 | ₹31,100 | | iPhone 16 Pro Max 512GB | ~₹1,41,900 | ₹1,09,400 | ₹32,500 |

A few patterns stand out. First, the savings gap widens as you go up the lineup - the Pro Max models show ₹31,000-₹32,500 in savings even against Amazon's festival pricing. Second, even the base iPhone 16 is ₹7,500 cheaper in Vietnam than Amazon's best price.

Warning: The Amazon "best prices" in my table assume you have an SBI or HDFC card, qualify for the full exchange discount, AND manage to add the product to cart before it sells out (iPhones go fast during flash deals). Without all three, add ₹5,000-₹15,000 to the Amazon column.

But Wait - The Amazon Sale Has Advantages Too

I'm not going to pretend Vietnam is better in every single way. The Amazon route has real benefits:

1. No Travel Required

Obviously. If you're not already going to Vietnam, buying a ₹5,000-₹15,000 round-trip flight just for an iPhone doesn't make financial sense. The math only works if you're traveling to Vietnam anyway - for work, vacation, or visiting someone.

2. Indian Warranty from Day One

An iPhone bought on Amazon India comes with Apple India warranty. An iPhone bought in Vietnam comes with Apple International warranty, which does work in India at authorized service centers. But the India warranty is technically simpler. I've never had issues getting my Vietnam-purchased iPhone serviced in India, but I know the worry is real.

3. No Customs Anxiety

You don't need to think about the ₹50,000 duty-free allowance or what happens if customs stops you. For someone buying just an iPhone (total value under ₹1,00,000), the customs risk is low - but it's still a consideration.

4. EMI Options

Amazon offers no-cost EMI on iPhones during sales. Vietnamese stores generally don't offer EMI to tourists. If you need to spread the payment over 6-12 months, Amazon wins here.

When Vietnam Wins Decisively Over the Amazon Sale

Scenario 1: You're Already Going to Vietnam

If you have a trip planned - for any reason - buying the iPhone there is a no-brainer for the Pro and Pro Max models. You're saving ₹25,000-₹32,500 over Amazon's best sale price. That's real money. Even for the base iPhone 16, the ₹7,500 savings is free money if you're already in the country.

Scenario 2: You're Buying Multiple Apple Products

This is where the Vietnam trip becomes genuinely worth it financially even if you weren't planning to travel. If you're buying an iPhone 16 Pro Max AND a MacBook Air M4:

| Purchase | Amazon/India Best | Vietnam Best | Savings | |----------|------------------|-------------|---------| | iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB | ₹1,26,900 (Amazon sale) | ₹94,400 | ₹32,500 | | MacBook Air M4 16/256 | ₹97,490 (no sale on Macs) | ₹71,200 | ₹26,290 | | Total | ₹2,24,390 | ₹1,65,600 | ₹58,790 |

₹58,790 saved. That's more than a round-trip flight to Vietnam from most Indian cities. I wrote more about the customs implications of buying both in my guide to buying MacBook and iPhone in Vietnam.

Scenario 3: You Don't Have the "Right" Credit Card

Amazon's sale prices depend heavily on bank partnerships. No SBI or HDFC card? Your effective Amazon price goes up by ₹5,000 immediately. In Vietnam, nobody cares which bank issued your card. Use any zero-forex card (Niyo, Fi, Jupiter) and you get the full savings.

The Timing Problem: Amazon Sale vs Vietnam Anytime

Here's something people don't factor in: opportunity cost of waiting.

The Amazon Great Indian Festival happens in late September or October. If it's March and you want an iPhone, you're looking at a 6-7 month wait. That's 6-7 months without the phone you want, watching prices stay flat on Amazon between sales.

In Vietnam, these prices are available today. And tomorrow. And next Tuesday. There's no "sale window" to catch, no refreshing the page at midnight, no competing with a million other buyers for limited stock.

I once waited four months for the Amazon sale to buy an iPhone. Saved about ₹15,000 compared to MRP. Then I calculated what I would've saved buying in Vietnam four months earlier - it was ₹30,000 more. I'd have had the phone for four extra months AND paid less. That was the last time I waited for an Amazon sale.

What About Flipkart's Big Billion Days?

Flipkart's BBD typically offers similar or slightly better iPhone deals compared to Amazon's Great Indian Festival. The effective prices are within ₹1,000-₹2,000 of each other. Even if you take Flipkart's absolute best price, Vietnam still wins by ₹20,000+ on Pro models.

I covered the full Flipkart vs Vietnam comparison in this post, customs could charge you 38.5% duty on the amount above ₹50,000. In practice, I've never been stopped for a single iPhone that was set up and clearly for personal use. But the risk exists. Read our customs duty guide before you go.

Quick Checklist: Vietnam vs Amazon Sale

Before you decide whether to buy an iPhone in Vietnam or wait for the Amazon sale in India, run through this:

  • Already going to Vietnam? → Buy there. Every model saves money.
  • Buying iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max? → Vietnam saves ₹25,000-₹32,000 over Amazon's best. Worth adjusting travel plans for.
  • Buying base iPhone 16 only? → Vietnam saves ₹7,500. Nice if you're there, not worth a trip for.
  • Don't have SBI/HDFC credit card? → Vietnam advantage grows by another ₹5,000.
  • Need EMI? → Amazon wins. Vietnam stores don't do EMI for tourists.
  • Buying other Apple products too? → Vietnam's combined savings make the trip financially justifiable even if you aren't already traveling.

The Amazon Great Indian Festival is great. I'm not dismissing it. But comparing it to Vietnam pricing is like comparing a 20% off coupon to walking into a store where everything is 35% off, every day of the year. For most people eyeing a Pro or Pro Max, Vietnam isn't just better - it's a different league.
